Fright night: Katie Holmes in the trailer for Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, her new film by Guillermo Del Toro

It's a long way from Dawson's Creek for Katie Holmes as she tries her hand at the horror genre in the trailer for her new movie, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark.

The 31-year old actress has been fairly quiet on the film front over the past couple of years, after giving birth to her daughter Suri, with husband Tom Cruise.

But she is returning with a bang in this Guillermo del Toro thriller about a young girl (Bailee Madison) who is sent to live with her father (played by Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (played by Holmes) in a house they are in the process of refurbishing.

The young girl comes across a hidden basement in the house which has remained untouched since the previous owner of the house vanished 100 years previously.

The discovery of the basement awakens a host of nasty creatures who then try to takeover the house and the family within it.

This isn't Katie's first time featuring in a horror film - in 1998 she starred in Disturbing Behaviour.
